THE WHITE BUSES

white busesThe White Buses refers to a program undertaken by the Danish and Swedish Red Cross to rescues all Scandinavian prisoners in concentration camps and transport them to neutral Sweden. In the spring of 1945 a convoy of buses, painted white with red crosses to avoid confusion with military vehicles, drove through war-torn Germany and into Czechoslovakia to rescue the Danish Jews in Theresienstadt. The convoy, under the command of Captain Folke, consisted of 23 Swedish buses, 12 private cars, motorcycles and a number of Danish ambulances with Danish doctors and nurses.
